People have used the term “spring cleaning” for centuries, but does anyone actually do spring cleaning? With our busy lives, why is spring cleaning important? After spending most of our time in our homes during the fall and winter –it’s easy to overlook how much dirt and grime has built up in our homes and how many things we’ve collected in our houses. Spring cleaning is an opportunity to take inventory of our spaces and whip them back into shape.
Do you feel like you’ve added more “stuff” and have less space in your home? Is there dust on your blinds or build-up on your baseboards? It can feel overwhelming to think through how to get your home back into shape after a winter of living indoors–we all wonder if we have the time and how to tackle spring cleaning.
We’re here to help break down the cleaning process for you. Here are some spring cleaning tips to get your space decluttered, cleaned, and ready for the newness of the spring season!
Create An Overall Spring Cleaning Plan
We want to give you some practical ideas on “how to do spring cleaning.” The easiest way to start any cleaning project is to make a plan. Most cleaning experts recommend starting with a list for each room in your home. Here are some examples of what you can put on your lists:
- For your bedrooms, create a task to rotate your mattresses.
- For your bathrooms, add to your list organizing cabinets and drawers and properly disposing of old medicine and toiletries.
- For your kitchen, think through a list that includes a deep clean of your stovetop, microwave, and countertops
Along with your plan, make sure to get anyone who lives in the house involved to help get the work done quickly. This is a sizeable task and requires a team effort to get it all done.
You’ll need cleaning supplies – but you only need a few basic cleaning tools. Get an all-purpose cleaner, a glass/window cleaners, a few microfiber towels, a toilet bowl brush, and a small container of bleach. Before you start cleaning, clean your cleaning tools–clean your vacuum’s filter and roller brush, vacuum the bottom of your broom, decide if your mop needs an upgrade and if you need to purchase new cleaning cloths.

Take The Opportunity To Clear Away Clutter
One of the best spring cleaning tips is to use this time to clear away clutter. Cleaning is both a clearing out of unused items as well as cleaning out the dirt from your home. Here are a few ideas to help you think through areas that could use some cleaning and organizing:
- Junk Drawers – consider what is inside your drawers, go ahead and go through them emptying them completely. Once they are cleared, use your vacuum to clean them out. Now is the time to get rid of anything you don’t regularly use. When you put the things you use regularly back into the drawer, organize those items with containers.
- Bathroom Drawers – go through your drawers and first throw away anything that has expired (make-up, medication, vitamins, etc.). For future use, since some products don’t list an expiration date, use a permanent marker to write the date you opened it. This will help you know what to get rid of in the future. After you have cleaned the drawers, re-organize them with the items you use the most.
- Bookshelves – now is the time to re-organize your books. Take them all down in order to wipe off the shelf. Once the shelf is clean, put your books back up according to color, size, or in alphabetical order.
- Closets – give yourself time to engage in this spring cleaning task. Look through your closet for any items that have stains, need repair, or that you didn’t wear this past season and remove them. Now is the time to clear out what didn’t work for you. Go ahead and take a moment to also look through your spring and summer items to make sure they are items you still like and that fit you. The idea is to make room for any new items you might want to get for the new season!
Spring Cleaning Is a Great Time To Incorporate Seasonal Chores
Some items only need to be cleaned once a year, and with milder weather temperatures, spring is a great time to tackle some of them.
- PATIO FURNITURE: Open your windows to air out your home. While you’re at it, clean off the furniture. Pull it away from the walls and vacuum underneath and behind it. Move things around to let fresh air remove allergens and dust from closed-off spaces.
- DOORMATS: Your doormats have been used quite a bit over the winter, so now is the time to wash them out. A great idea to help minimize dirt in the future is to have a doormat on both sides of your door–one inside and one outside.
- WINDOWS: Spring is a great time to clean your windows, draperies, and blinds. You might want to hire a window cleaning service for your windows. Read the washing instructions for any window curtains or drapes, and use a duster on your shades.
- GARAGE: The garage has probably collected extra items over the year, so spring is a great time to go through and declutter and organize it. This should include using a hose and dish soap to clean out your trash bins.
- APPLIANCES: For indoor yearly cleaning, think about rinsing your washing machine with a specialized cleaner, wiping out your entire fridge, using the self-cleaning option on your oven, and wiping down your kitchen cabinets.
