It’s no surprise that stainless steel appliances are so popular. In addition to their sleek, modern look, they are extremely durable. This much-loved appliance material has many other benefits as well. Since it is non-porous, stainless steel is more resistant to germs and bacteria than other types of surfaces. Likewise, many home and professional cooks prefer stainless steel pans because they deliver better results than other materials and are nearly indestructible.
On the flip side, stainless steel appliances tend to show fingerprints easily, although black stainless does less so. Stainless steel pans can be more difficult to clean than nonstick surfaces. But if you own stainless steel appliances or stainless-steel cookware, take heart. Cleaning stainless steel appliances and pans is not difficult!
Here Are Some Do's And Don’ts For How To Clean Stainless Steel Appliances
It’s easy to learn how to clean stainless steel appliances. Whether you want to know how to clean a stainless steel fridge, an oven range, or a dishwasher, here are some important dos and don’ts.
- Do check the manual: Before you begin, check your appliance manual for a list of safe cleaners to use. You don’t want to risk damaging its surface.
- Don’t use abrasives: Regardless of which method you choose, you should never try to clean your stainless-steel appliances with anything abrasive, such as steel wool, bleach, or ammonia.
- Don’t use alcohol or glass cleaner: Both can leave streaks and discolor the surface.
- Don’t use hard water: Use distilled or filtered instead.
- Don’t use oil-based formulas: If even the tiniest bit of oil remains on the surface, it will attract dust, making your appliances look dull again.
Now that you know what NOT to do, here are some different methods to try. There is not necessarily one best way to clean stainless steel appliances. You may want to experiment and figure out which is most effective for you.

Dish Soap
Step 1: Soak a microfiber rag in hot water and add a drop of dishwashing liquid. Start at the top of the refrigerator and go from one side to the other, working in small circles and removing any built-up dust, fingerprints, food, or grease.
Step 2: Take a second microfiber rag, soak it in warm water, and use it to rinse the surface.
Step 3: Before it dries, use a microfiber wax applicator sponge to remove moisture and buff the surface.
Steam Heat
Step 1: Place a soft handle attachment on your steam cleaner.
Step 2: Direct the flow of steam to the surface of the appliance, working in the direction of the grain, targeting small sections at a time.
Step 3: Use a microfiber rag to wipe away excess moisture.
Step. 4: Use another dry microfiber rag to polish the surface to a high shine.
Distilled Vinegar
Step 1: Mix one part vinegar and one part distilled water in a spray bottle. For harder to remove stains or marks, try undiluted vinegar.
Step 2: Spray the solution onto your appliance.
Step 3: For tougher to remove stains, allow the solution to sit on the surface for a few seconds.
Step 4: Dry and buff the surface with a clean microfiber cloth, working in the direction of the grain.
How To Clean a Stainless Steel Sink
Step 1: Use regular tap water to rinse your sink and remove any debris.
Step 2 Coat the basin in a paste of baking soda and water.
Step 3: Use a microfiber cloth to scrub in the direction of the grain, removing deep scratches as you work.
Step 4. Use a spray bottle to apply undiluted vinegar, which will cause the baking soda paste to bubble up.
Step 5: Wait a few minutes and rinse thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth
How To Clean Stainless Steel Pans
For everyday cleaning: Use a dish brush and dishwashing liquid to remove stuck-on food.
For especially stubborn stains, or food or grease that is harder to remove, use an abrasive sponge and either regular baking soda or a store-bought brand, such as Bar Keepers Friend, which even removes rust. A regular wooden toothpick is a great tool to pry grit from cracks and small crevices.
