If you feel overwhelmed with day-to-day tasks and are having difficulty keeping your house clean and tidy, you may consider hiring a professional house cleaning services company. Whether you’re looking for one-time deep house cleaning services or weekly house cleaning, there are so many aspects to evaluate before choosing a company, such as what type of cleaning products they use, the size of the crew, and scheduling flexibility.

But beyond those factors, there are some much more crucial considerations. Read on for the five things you should never overlook when choosing a house cleaning company.

1. Should House Cleaners be Insured?

Unequivocally, the answer is “yes!” Homeowners insurance pays for medical expenses or personal liability if someone is injured while visiting, but it doesn’t pay if someone is hurt while working for you in your home.

Professional cleaners are supposed to simplify your life! If a cleaning company employee has an accident while working in your home and the company isn’t insured, your wallet could take a major hit. And that type of headache is sure to complicate your life!

House cleaning insurance and workers’ compensation insurance prevent you from being held liable for medical bills, lost wages, or other expenses if a crew member is injured while working in your home.

Companies that hold auto insurance aren’t liable if an employee is injured on their way to or from your home. While it may seem as though that is only for their benefit, if there’s an unexpected accident, the cost might be passed on to you through rate increases.

2. What About Bonded?

Yes! They should be bonded as well. Ideally, an insured and bonded cleaning service will own a surety bond, so you don’t have to pay if any of your belongings are stolen or damaged, and have fidelity bonding so you are covered if for some reason they are unable to complete the work. And don’t forget to request documentation to prove the company is insured and bonded!

3. Does Licensing Matter?

Yes! Before settling on a house cleaning company, ask if they have a license to operate within your local area. The license is documentation that says they are legally allowed to operate their business.

Professional cleaning companies in California are usually required to have the following licenses and permits

  • Business license

  • Fire code permit

  • Hazardous materials disclosure

  • Wastewater discharge permit

  • State EPA number

  • State registration form for employer

4. Are Background Checks Necessary?

Yes! When you hire a cleaning service, you are allowing the employees to enter your home. Therefore, you must be certain that both you and your property are protected! You don’t want someone in your home who has a criminal history of theft, assault, or anything else. That is why background checks are so essential. Your house cleaning service should prescreen all of their employees before hiring them.

5. Should The Company Provide a Contractor For Services?

Absolutely! Any reliable professional house cleaning company will give you a contract that explains exactly which tasks they plan to perform. For example, if they are paid by the hour, you may want to include which tasks you deem most important in case they aren’t able to complete everything on your wishlist. The contract should also include details such as cleaning frequency and the terms of payment. If expectations aren’t communicated clearly, you may wind up not getting your money’s worth!
